How Roofing Squares Work

Roofers measure area in “squares,” where one square equals 100 square feet. After finding the total roof area, add a waste allowance for cuts and overlaps, then divide by 100 to get the number of squares.

Estimating Shingle Bundles

Most standard asphalt shingles come three bundles per square, so multiplying the number of squares by three gives a reasonable estimate of bundles needed for the job.
